Robert Bernstein is an attorney with McCarter and English in New York. He focuses on Real Estate Development and Construction in both domestic and international markets. He acts as counsel to owners and developers, construction managers, general contractors and design professionals. His work involves prominent projects such as the design/construction of sports facilities in New York and New Jersey, the design and construction of an oil refinery in Georgia (US State), and the expansion of the King Abdullah International Medical Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Bernstein has represented clients in complex commercial litigation, intellectual property disputes, civil rights litigation and discrimination actions. In addition to being a litigator, Mr. Bernstein acts as general counsel to middle market companies, advising those clients on a broad range of business law issues involving all aspects of their operations. He counsels clients on such diverse matters as corporate reorganisations, protection of intellectual property, compliance with industry-specific regulatory provisions, and securing assets. He also provides advice to architects and engineers – and their firms – regarding compliance with state licensing requirements.
Mr. Bernstein served an instrumental role in securing the largest favourable settlement in a major telecommunications provider’s history, involving a multibillion-dollar dispute related to the construction and ownership of an undersea fiber optic cable network. He acted as litigation counsel to a large international bank with respect to a half-billion-dollar commercial dispute arising out of the production of liquefied natural gas in Indonesia. He also aided a client – one of the 20 largest architecture and engineering firms in the United States – in taking advantage of capital markets typically closed to professional firms, in connection with a corporate reorganisation.
In recent years, Mr. Bernstein has been particularly active in the Middle East where his efforts have facilitated the firm’s representation of owners and developers, jewellery manufacturers, and private equity and wealth management firms. Mr. Bernstein has been instrumental in expanding the firm’s International Practice where he is active in construction, corporate and litigation matters. He currently serves as a National Representative for the International Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Committee
