Tsunami, Floods and Water Safety. A March 2011 industry news bulletin reported that 11 people had been killed and thousands of tourists were stranded by floods in southern Thailand. This came less than three weeks after the Japanese tsunami and widespread flooding in Queensland, Australia during December 2010 and January 2011. While there are no official figures available for the number of tourists injured or killed in these natural disasters, it is well established that tourists are very reliant on local people for help in such times of crisis.

A recent decision of the European Court of Justice confirms that a party which sells air travel, whether it be an air carrier or a travel agency, can only offer optional price supplements, such as flight cancellation insurance, on an ‘opt-in’ basis.
